Njord — God of the sea and commercial prosperity

Njord was the god of the sea, wind, fishing and wealth, and his blessing was crucial to the Vikings' travels, trade and seafaring. He represented safety at sea, wealth from trade and prosperity for the family. Vikings prayed to Njord for protection from storms and accidents during long journeys across seas and rivers.

According to the sagas, Njord lived by the sea in his great palace Noatun , where he could control the winds and weather. His power made him a god who actively influenced people's everyday lives, from fishing and shipping to economic prosperity.

Rites and runes

Fishermen, traders and travelers made offerings to Njord for safe travels, good catches and success in trade. Runes were carved on boats, weapons or jewelry to call upon his protection and blessing:

  • ᚢ (úr)“strength, determination, courage” , used to give strength and endurance on journeys.
  • ᛁ (ís)“ice, balance, stability” , symbolizes protection against dangers and balance in life.

Stories tell of Vikings carving Njord's runes on their ships before long voyages to ensure a safe journey and a bountiful catch. The rituals could include offerings such as fish, beer, or small metal objects, and show how religion and everyday life were intimately intertwined.
