Loki — Confusion, cunning and change

Loki was the god of cunning, chaos, and change, and despite his often negative role, he was central to Viking mythology. He represented unpredictability, humor, and risk, and his actions often led to both problems and solutions for gods and humans.

One of the most famous stories is about Loki tricking Balder to his death , which caused grief among the gods and showed how dangerous cunning and treachery could be. At the same time, Loki could be used as an example of creative problem solving , and the Vikings sometimes saw cunning and ingenuity as necessary in life.

Rites and runes

Runes could be used to invoke protection against betrayal and misfortune , but also to protect against Loki's chaotic forces :

  • ᛚ (lögr)“water, change, mobility” , symbolizes flow, change and adaptation.
  • ᛅ (ár)“year, life force, growing” , used to represent return, life and balance after chaos.

Vikings carved runes on jewelry, weapons or objects that would symbolically provide courage and protection against betrayal or unexpected dangers. Stories about Loki show that chaos and change can always be present in human life, but with the right rituals and runes, one could mitigate its effects and restore balance.
