Balder — Light, goodness and sorrow

Balder was the god of light and goodness, beloved by both gods and humans for his beauty, gentleness, and justice. He represented purity, peace, and hope, and his fate is central to Norse mythology. Balder was the god that everyone else feared losing, making his death one of the most tragic elements of Viking sagas.

According to myth, Balder was murdered through Loki's cunning, but his resurrection symbolized the victory of life over death and the return of light. The Vikings saw him as a reminder that goodness and light can always return, even after grief and loss.

Rites and runes

Runes were often carved for protection, blessing, and life force:

• ᛋ (sól) – “sun, life force, victory” , used to call for light, warmth and strength in life.
• ᛒ (bjarkan) – “life, rebirth, hope” , symbolizes new beginnings and protection against darkness and misfortune.

Balder was honored at summer sacrifices and sun festivals, and offerings could include food, drink, or small symbolic objects. Some Vikings carved runes on jewelry and wooden objects to remind themselves of Balder and his power. These rituals reinforced the sense of security, hope, and community in both everyday life and festivals.
